About this random animal generator

Press "Generate Animal" for a fair, unbiased pick from 412 species — mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and other invertebrates. Narrow the pool by animal type or by habitat, and set a quantity to generate a whole batch at once.

Filtering by animal type

Sometimes any animal will do; other times a lesson, quiz or writing prompt calls for one specific class. The "By animal type" options limit the pool to a single group before anything is picked, so a mammals-only draw never returns a beetle and a reptile draw never returns a frog. It is a quick way to use this as a random mammal generator, a random bird picker, or a random reptile, fish or insect generator without opening a different tool.

Filtering by habitat and theme

The habitat options group animals by where they live and by the themes people usually need them for: farm animals, pets, ocean and sea creatures, jungle and rainforest species, savanna and safari wildlife, forest animals, rivers and lakes, desert, arctic, mountains, grassland, and a zoo animals set. Every animal within your chosen group still has an equal chance of coming up.

Generating more than one animal

Raise the quantity to draw up to 20 animals in one go. Within a single batch no animal repeats, as long as the filter you picked holds that many species — so a batch of three from the amphibians group gives three different amphibians. Use "Copy All" to take the whole list into a document, a lesson plan or a drawing prompt sheet.

Common uses

How the randomness works

Each pick uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator rather than a simple pseudo-random call, and it discards values that would fall outside a clean multiple of the pool size. That rejection step removes the modulo bias that makes naive random pickers slightly favour the first few items in a list, so every species in the current filter genuinely has the same chance. Batches are produced with a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the same generator.

How many animals are included?

412 species, covering mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and other invertebrates.

Can I generate only one type of animal?

Yes. The filter narrows the pool to a single animal class — mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects or other invertebrates — before anything is picked.

Can I filter by habitat, like ocean or farm animals?

Yes. The same filter also groups animals by habitat and theme: farm, pets, ocean and sea, jungle and rainforest, savanna, forest, rivers and lakes, desert, arctic, mountains, grassland and zoo animals.

Can I generate several animals at once without repeats?

Yes. Set the quantity up to 20 and every animal in the batch will be different, as long as the filter you chose contains that many species.

Is the selection actually random?

Yes. Animals are picked with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator using rejection sampling, so every animal in the current filter has an equal chance.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you can generate.
