About this random job generator

Press Generate and a job title comes up, drawn from a list spanning healthcare, technology, trades, creative work, education, business, service, science and public service. Every job in the current filter has the same chance of appearing, so the list is not weighted towards the roles people already think of first.

Using it for career ideas

Most people can name perhaps twenty jobs off the top of their head, and career thinking rarely strays beyond them. Drawing at random breaks that habit: the point is not that the tool knows what suits you, but that it surfaces roles you would never have listed yourself. Treat a draw as a prompt to look something up rather than as advice.

Filtering by field

Narrowing to a single field is useful when the general direction is already decided and only the specific role is open — someone set on healthcare, or a class exploring the trades. The filter applies before the draw, so within a field every job still has an equal chance.

Characters, games and writing

A job title tells a reader an enormous amount about a character in two words, which is why random job draws are useful for fiction, improv and role-playing games. Drawing a job alongside a random name gives a character sketch in seconds, and the unlikely combinations are usually the interesting ones.

Common uses

How the randomness works

The list is filtered to the field you chose, then a job is drawn using your browser's cryptographic random source with rejection sampling, so no entry is favoured. Batches without repeats use a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the same source.

How do I generate a random job?

Press Generate and one job title appears. Press again for another, or raise the quantity to draw a list.

Can I limit it to one field?

Yes. The filter narrows the pool to healthcare, technology, trades, creative, education, business, service, science or public service.

Is this useful for career ideas?

It is a starting point rather than advice. Drawing jobs at random surfaces roles people rarely think of, which is often the point of the exercise.

Can I get a list of jobs at once?

Yes. Set the quantity, press Generate, then Copy All to take the whole list, one per line.

Can I use these for a game or a story?

Yes. Random job titles work well for character creation, improv scenes, guessing games and writing prompts.

Is the pick actually random?

Yes. Jobs are drawn with your browser's cryptographic random source, so every job in the chosen field has an equal chance.
