Modern mode draws from curated lists of common English first names and surnames — the same kind of names you'd meet in everyday life, useful for placeholder data, writing characters grounded in the real world, or simply picking a name for something. Fantasy mode is built differently: instead of a fixed list, each name is assembled from race-specific syllable patterns, so elf, dwarf, and generic fantasy names each have their own distinct sound and thousands of possible combinations rather than a few hundred fixed entries.
A short list of a few hundred elf names would start repeating quickly. Building names from syllable patterns instead — prefixes, optional middle sounds, and suffixes specific to each race — produces well over a thousand distinct combinations per race, each one still sounding authentically elvish, dwarvish, or generically fantastical rather than random noise.
Real names are drawn from curated lists of common English first names (male and female) and surnames, each randomly combined using a cryptographically secure random source.
