Sport to try

Random Sport Generator

Draw a random sport - team, racket, water, winter, combat, indoor or outdoor.

Runs locally in your browser. Nothing you generate is ever sent to a server.

Press "Generate Sport" to see a result here.

About this random sport generator

Press Generate and a sport comes up. The list runs well past the handful everyone names first, taking in racket sports, water sports, winter sports, combat sports and the indoor ones that rarely make a list at all.

Filtering by kind of sport

The groups follow how sports actually differ in practice: team games, racket sports, water sports, athletics, combat sports, winter sports, outdoor sports and indoor sports. Narrowing before the draw is what makes the tool useful for a PE lesson focused on one type, or for someone who knows they want something indoors.

Finding a sport to try

Most people choose a sport from the five or six they already know, which is a very small slice of what exists. A random draw does the one thing a shortlist cannot: it names something you had not thought of. Padel, bouldering and orienteering are all far easier to start than their obscurity suggests.

Common uses

How the randomness works

The list is filtered to the group you chose, then a sport is drawn using your browser's cryptographic random source with rejection sampling, so no sport is favoured. Batches without repeats use a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the same source.

How do I pick a random sport?

Press Generate and one sport comes up. Press again for another, or raise the quantity for a list.

Can I limit it to one kind of sport?

Yes. The filter covers team, racket, water, athletics, combat, winter, outdoor and indoor sports.

Can I use this to choose a new hobby?

Yes. That is one of the better uses - most people pick from the same five sports they already know, and a random draw puts something else in front of you.

Can I get a list for a PE lesson?

Yes. Set the quantity and press once, then Copy All to take the whole list, one per line.

Are these Olympic sports?

Many are, but the list also includes sports that are popular without being Olympic, like squash, pickleball and bouldering.

Is the pick actually random?

Yes. Each sport is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random source, so every sport in the chosen group has an equal chance.
